Colon Cancer Screenings Save Lives
Colorectal cancer, one of the nation’s leading cancers, often starts as a benign tumor or polyp, a small growth that projects out from the inside lining of the colon. That’s why colon cancer screenings are imperative: early detection may prevent the development of cancer. While not all polyps turn into cancer (and polyps that turn into cancer typically take several years to do so), in most cases there are few or no symptoms of colon cancer until the disease is advanced. Removal of colon polyps and early diagnosis is crucial. Colonoscopy is considered the “gold standard” for early detection, and studies have shown that colonoscopy can detect over 98% of significant colorectal tumors.
While physicians generally recommend patients with normal risk of colorectal cancer begin screenings at age 50, patients with a higher risk of colorectal cancer may be advised to begin earlier, including patients with:
- Previous history of adenomatous polyps or colorectal cancer
- Previous history of inflammatory bowel disease
- Family history of polyps or colorectal cancer
- Family history which increases colorectal cancer risk (Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) or Lynch Syndrome)
If you or a loved one are overdue for your routine colonoscopy, don’t wait! Scheduling your routine colonoscopy is easier and more convenient than ever with Fast Track Colonoscopy.
